Deep Tissue (Myofascial)
Massage releases
restrictions in the body's contractile connective tissues (the muscles)
and non-contractile supportive connective tissues (fascia).
The fascia exists throughout the body surrounding and supporting
muscle fibers, muscle groups, and all body organs. It affects all
components of the musculoskeletal, nervous and other organ systems.
The fascia does not contract like muscles do but can become
elastically deformed. These deformations are caused by physical and
emotional traumas. Fascia plays a major role in chronic pain or physical
dysfunction. Myofascial release techniques relax muscle spasms and break
up adhesions in the fascia.
During deep tissue massage slow long strokes, direct pressure, and friction are
applied with pressure to work the deep layers of connective tissue. The
fingers, thumbs and elbows are directed across the fibers of the muscles
and reach deeper than Swedish massage.
Deep
tissue massage can be directed at specific problem muscles and releasing
the “knots” in the surrounding connective tissue. This connective
tissue release helps to restore function, improve range of motion, reduce stress, and provide pain
relief.
