"Shiatsu"
means finger pressure in Japanese. Shiatsu massage therapy is
based on the Chinese theory of circulation of subtle energy, or Chi.
Chi circulates through meridians running in and
around the body. These meridians of energy govern all of the internal organs
and thus our entire metabolism. Along these meridians are points, the same
points as those used in Acupuncture, where the massage therapist can
enhance the Chi energy.
Shiatsu
massage
involves the combination of a
rhythmic
pressing of acupressure points, stretching, rubbing and spinal
manipulation.
The thumbs are used whenever possible
because they exert the firmest pressure.
Unlike most other
forms of massage, Shiatsu requires participation with the therapist in
coordinating the breaths with the applications of pressure.
Shiatsu
massage may be
used for health maintenance, for stress reduction, and relaxation.
